These flowers smell terrible - very much
like really bad smelly socks. Known as Mrs Barber's Brachystelma, I
prefer to call it the 'Stinking Sock plant'. Why do they stink? All flowering plants need to be pollinated so they can make seeds. These flowers release a smell almost guaranteed to atract flies, which then do the pollinating. The red colour of the flowers adds to the deception, as they probably think they are visiting some dead and rotting animal. |

A rare find This flower occurs on the estate near the Point. They are very rare, and in KwaZulu-Natal are found in just a few places. I'm offering 5 estate points to any Form one or two who can find one of these plants in flower. To prove you've found it, you will have to take me to the place, show me, and smell the flowers. Do not dig the plant up or pick the flowers. (Minus 5 points if you do this)
