To survive, grasslands must burn

Fire looks terrible when it burns up a huge section of veld.
Certainly it can kill many small animals.
But without fire, grasslands would disappear.
And without grasslands, most herbivores in Africa would
not survive.

This fire is burning grassland in Kruger National Park.
Old dead grass that has smothered young shoots is burnt off,
and grazing animals can reach it easily.

Young trees and bushes are killed by the fire.
This sounds bad, but in fact stops the bush encroaching
on grassland areas.

These Hilton Daisies in the wild garden flower prolifically
after fire. Their long-lived underground roots are designed
to survive veld fires. Many grassland plants need fire
to reproduce and grow properly.
